Message from the Ambassador
I would like to wish all members of the Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce good health and every success in your business activities for the benefit of Russian-Thai cooperation.
Dear colleagues and friends,
Thailand is our oldest partner in Southeast Asia and one of Russia’s biggest trading partners among ASEAN countries. During last year’s visits to Thailand by H.E. Mr. Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister of Russia, and H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, business cooperation was, of course, high on the agenda of their meetings with the Thai leadership.
Bilateral trade turnover had been growing for many years. However, due to turbulence in the global economy, it shrank in 2019 and continued to decrease in 2020. In view of the above, the task we face is to diversify the structure of exports and imports and, at the same time, to continue widening existing business links.
Promising areas include oil and fuel, natural gas, especially LNG, as well as electric power. Possible high-tech cooperation includes biotechnology, space technologies and peaceful nuclear technology. The IT sector and digital economy, including cybersecurity and e-government, have considerable potential for bilateral cooperation.
Russia is studying the opportunities opening up in Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Russian companies are eager to explore investment opportunities in the EEC in such areas as transport, aerospace logistics, energy, pharmaceutical and medical equipment production, advanced materials, financing and robotics.
There are opportunities to increase trade in food and agricultural products. Thailand’s investments in Russia’s agro-industrial complex are among the most active. CP Foods remains the largest Thai investor in the Russian economy. At the same time, Thai capital continues to explore new niches in the Russian economy.
The structure of Thai investments in our country is gradually diversifying away from services and acquiring a high-tech character. This is a promising trend.
